Matthew 7:24-29

The Wise and Foolish Builders

24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Reflection

I certainly can relate to both builders here. At some moments in my life I know I have made wise choices but let's face it, we all have times where we got it wrong and made the foolish choice. I am so grateful for God's grace.

God is often described as a rock and a firm foundation in our lives. This has been a comfort to me when I have faced difficulties and disappointments. Sometimes it can look like everything is falling apart. Many of us have lost a lot this year. God can hold us firm, as solid as a rock in these tumultuous times. He is unshakable.

By keeping God central in our life, listening to his word and putting this into practice, we find ourselves closer to God, firmly in his loving grip. He holds us in place in times of fear, worry doubt and loss. He is willing to do a lot of the heavy lifting and in return, he asks for our affection and to trust in him.

I know there have been moments in my life where the last thing I want to do in times of trouble was approach God and tell him how I'm feeling and why I'm hurting. However, I know that God's call everyday is to spend time in his presence, becoming closer to him. He protects us and hold us under his wings.

Sometimes it feels foolish to ask for help but often this is the wisest thing to do. What do you need to ask help for today? Do you need to ask for help from God, the church community, a professional?

Who can you be a strong support to today? Who could you share your wisdom with?

I hope that today you can feel his unshakable presence, solid as a rock. Spend time with him today feeling his comfort and support. Ask him to help you make wise choices that will hold you strong and steadfast.
