The Great Commission

This devotional is written by Matt Coombs. Matt is one of the leaders at St Mary's and is married to Pip.

Matthew 28:18-20

18 Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Reflection

This passage comes at the very end of Matthew's gospel and is often known as: The Great Commission. It is Jesus' last earthly message to his disciples. When you know that you're doing something for the last time you want to make it count. While Jesus still leads and guides, this is the message he wants his disciples to remember as his parting command. His final message: Go make disciples.

Jesus' first disciples really took this message to heart.
Fisherman became missionaries. A tax collector became a teacher. A small group of scared men huddled in a locked room went into the streets proclaiming the Lord Jesus.

Spend a moment meditating on these verses again. Read them through a few times prayerfully. What stands out? What did you need to be reminded of today?

Jesus has all the authority in heaven and on earth and he entrusts his purposes with you.
Jesus commands us to Go! Have we nestled ourselves safely in the comfort of the church?
Jesus will be with you.
