| St Mary's partners with The Besom, a Christian organisation which helps people make a difference by giving their time, money, things or skills to help those who are in real need and make a long term positive difference to their lives. |
| |
| Poverty, isolation, abuse, ill health, injustice, homelessness. We all see the sharp inequalities of life around us and the devastating impacts they have on people's lives. Many of us want to do something, to get involved but we don't always know how. The Besom, set up in 1987, exists to help us make a difference to the lives of others and to make it as easy as possible! |
| |
| Ways you can get involved: |
Giving Time as a Group The Besom provides a wide variety of opportunities for people to reach out into the London-area and help others in practical ways. Hundreds of members of local churches have already participated in projects. Recent projects include gardening for the sick and elderly and painting the homes of single parents, refugees and families living in shabby, run-down housing and after hours helping at The Besom warehouse. |
| |
Giving Time as an Individual The Besom makes it easy for people to give time in whatever way is best for them. Time-givers come predominantly from Central London congregations with a reference from their church. Opportunities include:
- Sorting clothing, household items, food and furniture, testing, ironing, mending or washing at the Besom warehouse (this takes place during the week),
- Spending a day helping to deliver items that have been given and see people's lives changed,
- Collecting good quality items given away by local shops and hotels,
- Being a collection point in your local area for small items given to those in need through The Besom

Giving Skills The Besom helps givers who have special skills put their talents to work for people who need them. If you have skills in carpentry, painting, DIY, cooking, literacy or teaching, or if you have any other special skill that you would like to apply, The Besom can match you with a London-area project that needs your help. |
| |
Giving Things Many of us have good quality things that we do not use or need and The Besom provides a service that enables you to pass them on to people who really need them. Those who are re-housed are often given flats with absolutely nothing in them. Those escaping domestic violence may have to leave all their possessions behind. Through a network of contacts in social services, charities, refuges and family centres, The Besom constantly hears about people living on the edge. We are then able to match up the things given with the needs we hear about. |
| |
Giving Money The Besom enables you to give money to something that concerns you and ensure that 100% of what you give will go to that need. The Besom funds grassroots projects in countries and areas of need specified by those giving the money. Recent projects include providing housing for abandoned street kids in Zambia and equipping a laundry helping homeless families in central London.
