London
Would you like to volunteer some of your time to visit people from our community at our local hospital?

Here are some of the ways that you can get involved with
St Mary's, Paddington:

Friends’ Shops and Tea Bar

Patient Feedback – you would be assisting patients in giving their views to the hospital’s PALS (Patient and Liaison Service) about their experience of the hospital. You would be working with the PALS team and training and supervision will be provided.

Ward Volunteers
These placements are essentially to provide patients with services which the nursing staff are unable to provide on a busy ward eg chatting to patients, running errands for them, keeping an eye to ensure that they are eating their meals, etc. NB Theses placements are extremely popular and there can be no guarantee that any will be available at he time of any application.

Ward shoppers
We provide a service where volunteers serve a group of wards seeing if patients would like any purchases from the various shops in the hospital.

Outpatient Departments
Volunteers can help in a variety of ways – escorting patients to other parts of the hospital, dealing with simple enquiries or directing patients to a proper source. This is increasingly an area where volunteers are being used.

Library trolley
We would like to extend this service which takes books around the wards for patients – it provides an ideal opportunity for chatting to patients even if they don’t wish to borrow books!

Alexander Fleming Museum
Volunteers act as guides to the museum and serve in the small souvenir shop there.

Chapel volunteers
Volunteers take wheelchair bound patients to and from their wards and the Hospital Chapel on Sunday mornings.

All of the above placements require the ability to work often unsupervised. A fair degree of initiative as well as good communication skills are needed – many of St Mary’s Hospital patients and visitors will not have English as their first language, so a good standard of spoken English is necessary.

NB. The placements available are for ‘lay’ people who are not in anyway qualified to undertake medical specialist work and if you wish to volunteer in any of the specialist departments eg pharmacy, laboratories, etc you first need to approach that department to see if they are happy to take on volunteers.

Please fill it in and return it to contact@stmaryslondon.com or post it to the church office. Thank you.
