Paul and Alessandra Williams are Friends of St Mary’s in partnership with St Andrew’s Chorleywood. They left the UK last August to plant a church in Maceió, NE Brazil.

The church plant is now moving into an exciting new phase in its development and soon hopes to move into a new venue.

“We are looking at possible venues in the historic part of the city. It is a place that is home to banks, law firms, university colleges and local government offices. In the evening the streets are buzzing as bars spread out onto the streets and live bands play into the night. It is also just a few minutes walk from the city’s red light district where young girls line street corners. Just beyond the bars and colleges lies a favela where many families live in abject poverty. The area presents a unique opportunity for the church to serve a diverse local community, bridging the gap between rich and poor.”

Finding and developing a venue is a big step. It will also mean added costs. Beyond the cost of rental, there will be a need for some refurbishment, furnishing, lighting, AV equipment and probably lots of fans!

Prior to his ordination, Paul was involved in the leadership of a mid-sized community (MSC) at St Andrew’s Church (www.st-andrews.org.uk). In support of Paul and Alessandra, their MSC is planning a Black Tie dinner at St Andrew’s on Saturday 23rd June to raise funds for the Maceió church. Tickets are on sale at £35 each. There will be an auction with high value lots, including breaks away to holiday homes. It will be a great evening with music, delicious food and fantastic company. It is also a great opportunity for you to have fun and know that you are supporting the work in Brazil.

If you would like to purchase a ticket, or offer something for the auction, please contact Paul Caneparo on 01923 331630 (evenings) or email paul@caneparo.eclipse.co.uk
